Asphalt paving& sealcoatingin Pilot Mountain, NC.
Pilot Mountain is a small Surry County town with a lot of long rural driveway around it, which is the kind of work we have spent thirty years doing on the Virginia side of the line. It is forty-five miles from our yard, down US-52.

Getting to Pilot Mountain
Down US-52 past Mount Airy, about forty-five road miles and an hour from Austinville. We generally group Pilot Mountain work with Mount Airy jobs on the same run rather than making the trip for a single driveway, so a little notice when you book makes a real difference to what date we can offer you.
What the pavement deals with here
Pilot Mountain sits at roughly 1,180 feet — over a thousand feet below the towns we work up on the Carroll County plateau, and about 750 feet below our own yard. The practical effect is a longer working year. Sealcoat needs warm ground and a dry surface to cure properly, and both arrive earlier in the spring and last later into the autumn down here than they do at home. The freeze-thaw cycle that does most of the winter damage to pavement in Virginia is milder at this elevation and happens less often. Surfaces here tend to age from sun, traffic and water sitting where it should not, rather than being levered apart by ice, and that changes which maintenance is actually worth your money.
What we get called for around Pilot Mountain
Mostly rural and residential. Long private drives, a good number of them still gravel and washing out a little more each spring, plus second homes and properties spread out around the state park. The distances are the defining feature — a quarter-mile drive is common here, and that is exactly the situation where paving the full length in hot mix asphalt stops making financial sense and a bound surface treatment starts to. The town itself has a modest amount of small commercial parking.
- Tar & Chip
The right answer for most long rural drives out here. It binds the surface so it stops washing out, at a fraction of what paving that distance in asphalt would cost.
- Asphalt Paving
For the shorter drives and turnarounds where a smooth surface is worth paying for.
- Grading & Excavating
On a long rural drive, where the water goes decides how long anything you put on top of it lasts.
- Sealcoating
Protects asphalt you already own. The season here is longer than it is at home, so there is more of the year in which we can do it.
Long drives are what we know
The work around Pilot Mountain looks a great deal like the work we have been doing in Grayson and Carroll counties for years — long private drives, rural grades, and owners tired of regrading gravel every spring. Thirty years of combined experience on exactly that problem, now licensed in North Carolina.
The reason tar and chip comes up so often on this page is not that it is what we like selling. It is that on a quarter-mile drive it is usually the surface that costs least and lasts longest, and we have laid a great deal of it. If asphalt is genuinely the better answer for your drive, we will say so instead.
We group Pilot Mountain work with other Surry County jobs on the same run, so booking a little ahead gets you a better date than calling for something urgent.
Common questions
Pilot Mountainquestions.
- How long have you been working in Surry County?
- We started taking North Carolina work in 2026, running out of a family yard in Austinville, Virginia, where we have over thirty years of combined experience paving and sealcoating. The long rural drives around Pilot Mountain are the same work we have been doing in Grayson and Carroll counties for years.
- My drive is a quarter mile of gravel. What would you suggest?
- Usually tar and chip, sometimes after grading to fix where the water is running. It binds the surface so it stops moving, grips well, and costs far less than paving that length in hot mix. We will give you a straight comparison of both rather than steering you at the bigger invoice.
- Will you come out this far for one driveway?
- Yes, though we will normally group it with other work in Surry County on the same run. Booking a little ahead rather than calling for something urgent gets you a better date.
